Description

Project is on federal property managed by the Bureau of Land Management in west central South Dakota. It is an existing Back Country Byway road about five miles long. It begins about 300 feet north of the westbound Interstate 90 Entrance Ramp and continues north to State Highway 34 about 0.5 miles east of Sturgis, South Dakota. The existing road is entirely gravel surface. Proposed improvements include: 1. Pave the northernmost 900 feet of Horse Soldier Road with asphalt including the intersection with State Highway 34 2. Recondition the remaining 4.8 miles of existing road with new surface gravel and rehabilitate super elevation in curves 3. Re-align about 750 feet of roadway to create a safe perpendicular intersection with one access road 4. Recondition and place new surface gravel in eight parking pullouts 5. Recondition and place new surface gravel in the existing Alkali Trailhead Parking Area 6. Remove and replace five CMP culverts 7.
