Description | Qualified individuals and firms for the Tarryall Bighorn Sheep Improvement project. The project is multi-phased focused on enhancing habitat for the struggling Tarryall bighorn sheep herd. The herd was once the largest in North America and was used as the source population for transplants around the intermountain west. Multiple pneumonia epidemics have reduced herd size significantly. Bighorn sheep habitat conditions in the Tarryall Mountains have decreased steadily over time due to fire suppression and the resulting conifer encroachment into traditional highvisibility sheep habitat. The failure of this herd to rebound after disease outbreaks may in part be due to the less than desirable habitat conditions which currently exist over a majority of their range. |
