2022 Water Leak Detection Program

Implementing multi-year (one year with the option to renew an additional four years) leak detection survey in 2022. Provides water and wastewater services to approximately 130,000 customers, covering a 24.5 square mile area in the central portion of Salt Lake County known as West Valley City. The District operates and maintains roughly 380 miles of water mains and approximately 28,000 retail water service connections providing water services to industrial, commercial, and residential customers. In 2021, the District completed a leak detection program primarily focused on our cast iron and metallic water mains that inspected approximately 100 miles of pipeline. Three quarters of water pipelines in the District remain to be surveyed and this survey will focus primarily on non-metallic pipe materials. District water main sizes and types vary from 4-inches to 30-inches in diameter, with PVC making up approximately 65 percent of the District’s water main pipe material. Cast iron is the second-largest material type accounting for roughly 25 percent of our water mains. Steel, asbestos concrete, and ductile iron make up the remaining pipe materials.
