Description | The water main shall be located about four feet back of curb of the east curb and gutter sections of North Mears Street. The point of beginning shall be on the northeast corner of the intersection of Gordon Avenue and North Mears Street. It is assumed that the east/west water main along the north side of Gordon Avenue is a 6 diameter cast iron pipe. The project shall begin with a connection to the east/west water main and then installation of a new 8 diameter gate valve. The existing 4 water main that is being replaced shall be capped off. Removal of the existing 4 water main shall not be necessary unless the water main is conflicting with the installation of the new 8 diameter water main. Water service to the existing homes along North Mears Street shall be maintained during the construction of the new water main. The existing 4 water main is located near the back of curb along the east side of North Mears Street. The south end of the project shall require exposing the existing 8 x 6 Tee supplying water to the existing fire hydrant. The Contractor shall remove the existing 8 x 4 Reducer and install a new 8 diameter gate valve. The Contractor shall install a new 8 diameter PVC water main between Norfolk and Gordon Avenues. There shall be one fire hydrant required near the high point of the profile. There shall be 8 water service connections required. The Contractor shall have the option of installing the new water main from the north to the south or from the south to the north. Past construction of water mains in this area have experienced Butte Rock type formations along water trenches. There shall be one water pressure test and laboratory testing of the new water main installation. The Contractor shall be responsible for furnishing all labor, equipment, materials and incidentals necessary to properly construct an 8 diameter WATER MAIN REPLACEMENT LOOP along the east side of North Mears Street as indicated on the plans and specifications. The approximate length of the 8 diameter water main is 670 lineal feet. The water main shall include appropriate fire hydrants and line valves. The extent of the work (All labor, materials, equipment, supplies, and incidentals shall be furnished by the Contractor) for the Water Main Replacement Loop consists of connecting to the existing water main on the north side of the intersection of Norfolk Avenue and North Mears Street. And then proceeding to the north along the east side of North Mears Street to the existing water main running in an east/west direction along the north side of Gordon Avenue. The working pressure of the existing water main is 50 psi. Excavation and backfilling of the water main trench shall require conformance with OSHA and 29 CFR 1926, Subpart P. It is contemplated shoring of the pipe trench will be required in the vicinity of the power line poles parallel to the planned water main installation. Backfill shall be compacted to 90% of maximum dry density. Maximum lifts of backfill material shall be 8 loose depth prior to compaction. There has been no test drilling performed on the construction site, but it is contemplated some trench areas may require special bedding for the pipe installation. The Engineer shall decide which areas will require special bedding. Digger s Hot Line shall be contacted 48 hours prior to any ground disturbance. Digger s Hot Line telephone number is: 800-331-5666. Specifications and plans for the work can be examined and procured from the office of the City Clerk, Chadron, Nebraska.
