Superstructure Replacement of CT DEEP Bridge E118 (DOT #06323) Devil`s Hopyard State Park

Bridge E118 (DOT #06323) dates to 1970 and is located in Devil's Hopyard State Park, East Haddam, CT. The bridge carries Loop trail over Eight Mile River, a national wild and scenic river. The bridge is an aesthetic covered bridge which is very popular and used by hikers (recreating public) for recreational purposes along loop trail. Per the 2016 bridge inspection report, the bridge was found to be in overall poor condition and in need of the replacement of its superstructure with also minor substructure work needed. Replacement superstructure type to be a wooden covered bridge so as to preserve the current aesthetic view. Superstructure replacement work will ensure the safe use of the bridge by the recreating public. Specific work includes the demolition of the existing superstructure, restoration of existing W8 steel beams and base plates and replacement of the superstructure. Work also includes clearing in designated areas, protecting existing planting to remain, stripping and stockpiling of topsoil, site landscaping, site grading and installation of all erosion and sediment control measures. It is the goal of DEEP Engineering and Support Services to replace the existing bridge superstructure with a new wooden covered bridge superstructure so as to preserve the current aesthetic view of the bridge.
