Description

This project consists of a full repair by replacement of the northern portion of Bulkhead S45 and associated stormwater system infrastructure. Bulkhead S45 is a portion of a larger shoreline bulkhead system constructed to stabilize the upland area and support the shore facilities and infrastructure in the Coddington Cove area of Naval Station Newport. The following facilities make-up the Waterfront Stabilization Facility: S45, S366, S50, and S499. This project will protect the embankments and shore structures from erosion and prevent further bulkhead damage from wave action. Additionally, this project will provide proper storm water management. This project shall meet all aspects of the applicable EPA Record of Decision (ROD) for the CERCLA/IR Superfund Site, Site 19. This portion of Bulkhead S45 consists of approximately 300 LF of steel sheetpile located just south of Pier 1 to the existing rip-rap portion of S45. The existing bulkhead is currently in disrepair. This project proposes to repair the damaged sheet-pile wall by replacing it with a new steel sheet-pile system that will include a wale system connected to a concrete deadman anchor. The new system will be coated with a coal-tar epoxy to help prevent corrosion. Stormwater system improvements proposed as part of this project shall include replacing damaged or inadequate outfalls and piping within this portion of the bulkhead. Additionally, several pipes are proposed to be cleaned of dirt and debris.
