Emerson Avenue Improvements

Widen Emerson Avenue to include four 12-foot wide travel lanes (two northbound, two southbound). The typical section includes on 16-foot wide two-way left turn lane or a raised median, as well as curb and gutters. Additionally, two 6-foot wide sidewalks (one on either side of the proposed roadway) will be constructed with 6-foot wide vegetated utility strips separating the sidewalk from the travel lanes. existing pedestrian facilities would be saved whenever possible and new sidewalks would tie into existing facilities. The curb and gutters will capture stormwater from teh roadway and convey it to a new enclosed storm sewer system removing drainage from existing open roadside ditches throughout the project area. A new bridge over I-65 would be constructed offline (west) of the current alignment of Emerson Avenue and will include four 12-foot wide travel lanes (two northboudn, two southbound), curb and gutters, and 6-foot, 7-inch wide sidewalks (one on either side of the roadway). Intersection improvements, including new traffic signals and modifications to existing traffic signals, would be included in the proposed project, based on traffic analysis of Emerson Avenue and the intersecting roadways. The proposed construction of this project will require 1.93 acres of new permanent right-of-way and 0.9 acre of temporary right-of-way. No relocations are anticipated. The maintenance of traffic (MOT) plan proposes maintaining a single lane of traffic in each direction of Emerson Avenue for the duration of the proposed project. Traffic is anticipated to be maintained in phases.
