Description | Building 420 houses the domestic water pump system for SAFB. This facility is located inside the Restricted Area (RA). There are currently two American Marsh domestic water pumps in service in Building 420. These pumps run on variable frequency drives (VFD), and are rated for 1,500 GPM at 90 psi. They are powered by 125 horsepower (HP) electric motors. There is room for one additional domestic water supply standby pump which can be added for redundancy. The pumps are set at a pre-set pressure of approximately 84 psi. These domestic water pumps are oversized for the wide range of flows at SAFB. Night time flows are below 100 GPM. Even with the VFD’s, these low flows operate substantially outside the recommended range for these pumps. There are also three fire pumps housed in Building 420. Two of the fire pumps are 125 HP electric fire pumps, each rated for 1,000 GPM at 125 psi. The third fire pump is a 2012 diesel driven single stage fire pump rated for 1,500 GPM at 125 psi. The third diesel fire pump provides approximately 24 hours of backup water at full engine power. |
