Description | The two I-40 bridges (5848 and 5849) over the South Fork Puerco River at MP 35.0 do not satisfy NMDOT drainage design criteria. An existing conditions 2D hydraulic model for the bridges shows the drainage capacity issue is two-fold: • Due to the floodplain topography upstream (north) of I-40, a significant portion of the 50- and 100-year peak discharges are conveyed in the northwest overbank and bypass the existing bridge, overtopping I-40 at a low point approximately 0.5 miles to the west; • The bridge waterway conveyance area is not adequate to pass the 100-year peak discharge (approximately 11,000 cfs). The capacity of the existing bridge opening is approximately 4,500 cfs |
