Description

The Waukegan sewage treatment plant is providing an advanced treatment of the wastewater flows from the Waukegan region. Thus, in many of technological treatment steps or facilities in the plant, that have a direct contact with the wastewater or the resulting residues or sludges, stagnant air or odorous air emanated from the processes needs to be extracted and treated or discharged to atmosphere in order to allow the personnel a safe working environment and also to maintain the air quality for a proper functioning of the equipment installed in those spaces where the odors are produced. The focus of this project is on the following two buildings: 1. Influent and Overflow Pumping Station Building no. 010; 2. Imhoff Primary Access Building no. 046. Influent and Overflow Pumping Station (010) The building spaces are divided into: Pumping room, North Screens rooms, North Loading area, South Screens rooms and South Loading Area. The HVAC systems for the Screens and Loading areas are of essentially identical original design, with only slight variation in physical dimensions of the spaces served. These spaces consist of a lower level channel area which is accessed via ladder from a grade level Screen Room. The Screen Room is connected to the Loading Room by mandoors and conveyor penetrations. All these connected spaces are ventilated by a common ventilation system consisting of a natural gas, indirect fired make-up air unit supplying air to the grade level Screen Room and Loading Room and exhaust to an odor control system from the Loading Room and the lower level channel space. Additional heat is provided to the Loading Room by means of a natural gas unit heater. The gas fired make-up air units that supplies fresh air to these spaces are installed within the Loading Rooms South and North, on the mezzanine level accessed by vertical ladder. Imhoff Primary Access Building (046) The building is divided into the main floor or ground floor where the control centers are located for the process equipment at Imhoff Primary tanks, and the pumps room and technical gallery in the basement. The HVAC equipment in the pumps room and technical gallery under the Imhoff Access Building is old and part of that system is not working anymore.
