Description | https://www.metrowestdailynews.com/story/business/transportation/2022/11/25/mass-pike-495-infrastructure-upgrade-enters-construction-phase-nov-28/69666336007/ - Nighttime construction crews will begin installing temporary barriers next week along the shoulders of the roadways near the junction of the Massachusetts Turnpike and Interstate 495, as a long-anticipated $466 million infrastructure improvement project enters its construction phase. Barry Lorion, director of the state Department of Transportation's Highway 3 Division, confirmed last week during a virtual forum that barrier installment was set to begin Monday. The action won't alter the number of lanes available for motorists. "We at MassDOT are confident in our ability to complete this challenging project," Lorion said. "The project will eliminate the old toll booth area (on the Pike) and weaving areas, all while working with an extremely sensitive environmental resource area and with neighborhoods close by." The project calls for all ramps associated with the I-495/I-90 interchange to be replaced in such a way as to reduce crashes, travel time and traffic. The interchange, which straddles the Hopkinton-Westborough line, borders the Roosevelt Farms neighborhood and Whitehall Reservoir. Construction and replacement of the ramps will extend three-fourths of a mile in each direction of the interchange, with Lorion saying the revised roadway will be "unrecognizable" after construction. The project is scheduled to be completed by June 2027, and involves replacing all ramps as well as bridges over Fruit Street, Flanders Road and over the MBTA. The state is partnering with construction firms Barletta, O&G and Aetna Bridge Company, as well as design firm VHB. The interchange is extremely busy, carrying more than 75,000 cars per day, including about 50% of eastern Massachusetts' commercial truck traffic, according to MassDOT. Stage 1, which is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2024, includes a reworked I-495 northbound, construction of the new Fruit Street bridge (in two stages), and two new ramps between the two highways. "All of these actions will have limited impact on the traveling public," said Donald Cooke, VHB design manager, during last week's meeting. "A little later this year and into next year, you'll start to see some of the actual construction." _______________________________________________________________________________________ As of 5/17/2022 this project has not yet been awarded.
