Description

The Sunlight Radio Communication Tower site is located just outside of Glenwood Springs in Garfield County, Colorado on public property managed by the United States Forest Service. It is located on Sunlight Mountain at Lat. 39.427998 Lon. -107.381779, elevation 10,575’. The site consists of a framed shelter about 20’ X 20’. Within the shelter is a propane generator and equipment racks. There is a 160’guyed tower that was likely built in the 1970’s. Adjacent to the shelter is a raised galvanized platform that houses several cabinets owned by the FAA. There is a 1,000 gallon above ground propane tank to run the generator in the shelter. The Sunlight site is on BLM land. Garfield County currently has a lease with the BLM through 2047. The site can usually be accessed by vehicle from June through November. The road is steep and windy. Several switchbacks will limit the length and type of trailer that can access the site. Generally, a 20’ gooseneck can make it; however, the trailer will cut the corner on several switchbacks. Due to the road and trees, it is unlikely to get a pre-manufactured shelter up the road, therefore, the shelter addition will most likely need to be stick framed. An all-wheel drive steering crane should be able to access the site without any problem. The road is lined with aspen trees that routinely fall across the road. Always have a chainsaw and tow straps with you since you will probably need to cut and move at least one or two trees over the course of the project.
