Description | This is a 348 acre thinning sale of approximately 40 year old planted slash pine from the Tide Swamp unit of Big Bend Wildlife Management Area in Taylor County, Florida. Most of this pine has been third row thinned in past years. Approximately 84 acres of the sale area has been marked as an "example area". Within the marked area, the trees marked with blue paint are the trees to leave. The pine trees with no paint are the trees included in the sale. The remaining basal area within this area averages approximately 40 square feet per acre. Upon completion of harvest within this area, the marked area should be a good reference as to the desired density and quality of leave trees for the remainder of the sale area. The remainder of the sale area has not been marked (there are 2 small sample areas marked to be used as an example). It will be the responsibility of the buyer to leave an average of 40 to 50 square feet of pine basal area per acre. The trees to leave will be the better formed dominant or co-dominate trees free of any obvious defects such as forks, crooks, and cankers. Within the unmarked portion of the sale area there are approximately 64 acres that will be thinned on a different pattern which will include patch clearcuts. This "test pattern" is being tried to facilitate the planting of longleaf within this area. The forester-in-charge and/or biologist will be available to assist with proper spacing, flagging, etc. once work begins in this area. The 84 acre marked area has been cruised with the following results: pine pulpwood tree length 13.0 tons per acre, pine pulpwood topwood 3.3 tons per acre, chip-n-saw 24.1 tons per acre, sawtimber 8.8 tons per acre. These cruise results will be used to establish an estimate of value for the entire Horse Fly sale area. The contract period for this sale will be 24 months. | ||
