Description | Fill and seal an abandoned underground mine related vertical opening that is capturing the intermittent flow of a feeding stream to a tributary to the Hocking River. The 21 feet deep vertical opening poses a health and safety threat to hunters and recreational enthusiasts who frequent the area and introduces fresh water into an abandoned mine complex resulting in subsequent acid mine discharges. To fix this problem the vertical opening will be backfilled with a crushed limestone plug, the plug will be covered in soil and the stream will be reconnected with the tributary. The stream will be reconstructed with an impermeable layer to prevent future stream captures and with Type D rock channel protection to prevent erosion damage. The Roy Plant Stream Capture project is located in Athens County, York Township, and Section 9. Site access shall be from SR 691. Major work items in this project include, but are not limited, to approximately 500 CY of Earthwork, 422 TONS of ODOT Crushed Limestone and 58 SY of Impervious Liner. |
