Description | Work under this Project consists of shoreline stabilization at four segments of the park shoreline along with riparian buffer and wetland plantings. The shoreline is characterized by nearly vertical, eroding banks ranging from approximately 3 to 15 feet in height broken up by localized areas of bank stability. The project proposes a living shoreline with rock marsh sills and beach nourishment on the west side of the park along the Chickahominy River and marsh creation and stabilization using rock marsh sills, submerged logs, marsh creation, and plantings for a portion of the Gordon Creek Shoreline to the north. A small area of the shoreline of Gordon Greek is proposed to be stabilized using a rock revetment. Locations where bald cypress trees are present along the toe of existing banks are preserved and expanded with marsh creation wherever feasible. A planting plan of native plants appropriate for their location has been developed and will be implemented throughout the project area. In addition, riparian plantings are proposed to convert 0.46 acres of existing managed turf to a forested condition and another 0.29 acres of understory enhancement to existing buffer areas. |
