Description

Ouray National Wildlife Refuge is managed as part of the Lower Green River Complex as a sanctuary for migratory birds, threatened and endangered species, and species of special concern. The Auto Tour Route (RTE 011) is a 4.7 mile loop road that provides access to the southwest portion of the refuge which primarily consists of riparian, wetland, and grassland habitat. During periods of high flows in the Green River, primarily during peak spring runoff, large portions of the southern segment of the roadway inundates with flood water, requiring a full road closure. The purpose of the project is to improve access to this portion of the refuge by providing turn around locations that allow the east and west segments of the Auto Tour Route (RTE 011) to remain open during periods of high flows. The project also improves safety and provides for longer term access at one location by shifting the roadway alignment away from an area of river bank erosion. The project consists of roadway rehabilitation and aggregate surface course resurfacing of approximately 1.64 miles of the northwest segment and 1.51 miles of the northeast segment of the Auto Tour Route (RTE 011) and 0.04 miles of an adjacent Fishing Access spur. The northeast segment also includes 982 feet of roadway realignment away from an area of embankment instability along the Green River bank and realignment of the intersection at the Refuge Entrance Road to a standard “T” intersection. The project also includes installation of new gates, bollards, and signs. SIGNIFICANT QUANTITIES (Schedule A): 3.3 Miles Surface Reconditioning 1,250 CUYD of Embankment Construction, 5,900 Ton of Aggregate Surface Course,
