Description

Water Control Structure (WCS) No. 108 is located on the Cocoplum waterway just west of Collingswood Boulevard in the City of North Port. The structure is equipped with six (6) gates which are operated in the closed position in order to allow storage of water similar to a reservoir. In anticipation of pending rain storm events and as the water level rises, the gates are opened as needed to reduce flooding and discharge water into the Myakkahatchee Creek. The water in the Cocoplum waterway serves as a raw water supply for the City’s Water Treatment Plant. Thus, the proper functioning of these gates and structure are critical to the City's ability to control water levels, minimize adverse impacts from storm events and supplement the City’s potable water supply. This structure was constructed in the 1950’s. Over time, extensive corrosion has developed in the sheet metal weir piling, concrete supports, gates and catwalk. The purpose of this project is to retain a Contractor to construct a new WCS No. 108 to be located between the existing structure and Collingswood Boulevard. The new WCS No. 108 structure includes a coated sheet metal piling weir with reinforced concrete cap, rip-rap, and catwalk with lighting. There will be a total of six (6) new stainless steel, manually operated gates. The two (2) center gates will be push-down type and the other four (4) gates will be pull-up type. Work will include dewatering, flow by-passing, and turbidity monitoring to meet regulatory limits during construction and demolition of the existing WCS No. 108 structure.
