Description

PN-049302306 This project is generally described as the renovation of Memorial Court. The work includes, but not limited to, coordination with VA Tech's contractor for the removal and reinstall of the existing flagstone pavers, removal and reinstall of the granite stair tread/riser system at east and west sides of upper court, and the removal and reinstallation of the Hokie stone and precast coping cap. The work also includes the removal of the existing waterproofing system below flagstone pavers and stair tread/riser system. Contractor will be expected to install new waterproofing system. The contractor will also install new flashing and weep system at base of parapet walls and pylons and remove existing light fixtures and installation of new light fixtures. Inquiries must be submitted by 12:00 PM on June 6, 2023 The general description of the Work covered by the Contract Documents is listed below: 1. General requirements and conditions of the project. 2. Remove and Reinstall Upper and Lower Court Flagstone Paver System: a. Remove, salvage, clean, catalog and store existing flagstone pavers for reinstallation. b. Remove mortar bed. c. Fabricate new like pavers to replace cracked pavers. d. Reinstall pavers on new mortar setting bed reinforced with epoxy coated welded wire fabric. e. Reinstall pavers with tooled grouted joints and with expansion joints. f. Install new light fixtures (refer to electrical drawings). 3. Remove and Replace Upper and Lower Waterproofing System. a. Remove drainage mat, protection layer, EPDM membrane, built-up membrane, lightweight concrete fill, and foam glass insulation. b. Existing coal tar pitch built-up membrane on top of the structural slab to remain. Remove the existing built-up flashings from vertical surfaces. Flash the perimeter of the existing coal tar pitch built-up membrane which is intended to keep the chapel watertight during construction. c. Remove existing drains. Install new drains and connect to existing drainpipes. d. Remove existing light fixtures and related conduit. Install new light fixtures and new conduit. e. Install new concrete saddles reinforced with epoxy coated welded wire fabric above the existing coal tar pitch built-up membrane at locations specified on the construction documents. f. Install new cold-applied waterproofing membrane on existing coal tar pitch built-up membrane or on new concrete saddles as specified in the construction documents. g. Install new protection layer. h. Install new drainage mat. i. Install new 4-inch extruded polystyrene insulation (XPS) (two 2-inch boards). j. Install new electrical conduits for new light fixtures (refer to electrical drawings) 4. Remove and Reinstall Existing Stair Granite Tread/Riser Units. a. Remove, salvage, clean, catalog and store existing granite tread/riser units for reinstallation. b. Remove mortar setting bed, drainage mat, protection layer, EPDM membrane, builtup membrane, and lightweight concrete fill. c. Existing coal tar pitch built-up membrane on top of the structural slab to remain. Remove the existing built-up flashings from vertical surfaces. Flash the perimeter of the existing coal tar pitch built-up membrane which is intended to keep the chapel watertight during construction. d. Install new 2-inch XPS insulation over occupied space and install a new concrete overlay reinforced with epoxy coated welded wire fabric. e. At west stairs, install new concrete treads, risers and troughs reinforced with epoxy coated reinforcement. f. Install new cold-applied waterproofing membrane. g. Install new protection layer. h. Install new drainage mat. i. Reinstall existing granite tread/riser units on a new mortar setting bed reinforced with welded wire fabric. j. Grout and tool joints between tread/riser units. Install expansion joints with compressible filler and sealant as specified in the construction documents. 5. Remove and Reinstall Monument Granite Base Units. a. Protect the granite panels on monument. b. Remove, salvage, clean, catalog and store existing monument granite base units for reinstallation. c. Remove mortar setting bed, drainage mat, protection layer, EPDM membrane, builtup membrane, lightweight concrete fill, and foam glass insulation. d. Existing coal tar pitch built-up membrane on top of the structural slab to remain. Remove the existing built-up flashings from vertical surfaces. Flash the perimeter of the existing coal tar pitch built-up membrane which is intended to keep the chapel watertight during construction. e. Install new concrete fill reinforced with epoxy coated welded wire fabric. f. Install new cold-applied waterproofing membrane. g. Install new protection layer. h. Install new drainage mat. i. Reinstall existing monument granite base units on a new mortar setting bed reinforced with epoxy coated welded wire fabric. j. Grout joints between monument granite base units. Install expansion joints with compressible filler and sealant as specified in construction documents. 6. Removal and Replacement of Sidewalk Adjacent to East Side of Upper Court a. Remove existing concrete sidewalk on grade with exposed aggregate finish. b. Install new 5-inch-thick concrete sidewalk reinforced with epoxy coated welded wire fabric. c. Install control joints in new concrete sidewalk as specified in the construction documents. d. Finish new concrete sidewalk with a light broom finish. 7. Renovation of Upper and Lower Court Parapet Walls a. Remove and reinstall limestone coping after modifying openings in select copings to receive new light fixtures. i. Install non-corrosive metal cover at light fixtures. b. Remove Hokie stone from memorial court side of the wall. c. Remove back-up masonry. d. Install new concrete curb. e. Install new back-up CMU masonry. f. Reinstall existing Hokie stone units at their original locations in Type N mortar. g. Install masonry wall ties. h. Point joints with prehydrated Type N mortar in three lifts. i. Prior to reinstallation of limestone coping: i. Install sheet metal through wall flashings with drip edges. ii. Install self-adhering membrane flashing over the new sheet metal through wall flashing. j. Reinstall existing coping units and install new coping units in a mortar setting bed and full mortar joints. k. Install plastic weeps in the coping head joints. l. Rake back mortar joints between limestone copings 3/4 inch and install backer rod and sealant in the joints. m. Install expansion joint between coping and pylons. n. Clean Hokie stone and limestone coping after all work in memorial court is completed and accepted by owner. 8. Pylon Restoration a. Remove bottom course of limestone panels from pylons. b. Flash the perimeter of the existing built-up membrane. c. Install a new concrete curb reinforced with epoxy coated reinforcing bars. d. Flash the curb and back-up masonry with the new waterproofing. e. Install new limestone to match the shape of the existing limestone panels removed. Clean all limestone cladding, engraving and sculptures. f. Grind and repoint all mortar joints. On top of the pylons install backer rod and sealant in the joints. 9. Monument Restoration a. Monument with granite panels with carved names to remain in place and shall not be moved. b. Cover and protect monument form the weather and from construction activities during the work. c. Rake back all mortar joints between all granite panels on monument 3/4 inch without any damage to panels and tuckpoint joints with prehydrated type n mortar in three lifts. Tool joints concave. d. Clean all granite panels after all work in memorial court is completed and accepted by Owner. 10. Cleaning a. Clean Hokie stone masonry on court side of parapet walls at upper and lower courts. b. Clean Hokie stone on Drillfield street side of curved parapet walls adjacent to east end of upper court.
