New Animal Shelter - County of Spartanburg

As of December 9, 2022, Owner does not have any current information on the project. Spartanburg County is taking steps to build its own animal shelter at a cost of $17.4 million after using Greenville County's shelter for 11 years. The price is an estimate provided by a hired consultant who performed a feasibility study on cost and capacity. The recommendation included building a pet resource center that would remain open seven days a week and be able to take in 1,500 strays each year. The proposed facility would be a one-story building with an 18,994-square-foot interior with stalls and a 4,690-square-foot outside area with kennels. The location is still unknown, but it is recommended to build the shelter on a 2.7-acre site. The Spartanburg County Council in November approved $5 million in federal COVID-relief funds for a new shelter. Spartanburg County had to deal with its shelter needs when Greenville Animal Care announced in April that it would end its 11-year-old agreement with Spartanburg County on June 30 due to space needs of its own. Project is in the FY2023-27 CIP.
