Electrical Switchgear Maintenance BWPF

The switch gear at Binney Water Purification Facility (BWPF) is the framework used for managing, protecting and isolating electrical circuits and equipment and includes things such as disconnect switches, fuses, and circuit breakers. The switch gear is designed to detect faults in the electrical system as BWPF and allows generators and other electrical equipment to switch on and off preventing service interruption or damage to equipment. Malfunctioning switch gear can cause fires and explosions resulting in injury or facility closure. Testing, inspection and planned maintenance help reduce the risk of injury and potential system failures. Electrical Contractor best practice recommendations include performing switch gear testing and maintenance every three years. However, electrical switch gear maintenance has never been performed at Binney Treatment Plant. This SOW and proposed testing, inspection and maintenance of the switch gear requires a system outage and must wait until BWPF is offline for annual maintenance. The next planned maintenance shutdown for BWPF is in May 2022.
