Description

Saginaw Valley State board approves renovations to housing The Saginaw Valley State University Board of Control approved spending nearly $5.8 million to renovate and improve SVSU's award-winning residential facilities during the Board's regular meeting Friday, Dec. 16. SVSU plans to renovate on-campus apartment buildings in Pine Grove Central at a cost of $3.8 million and the Tranquil Hall portion of First Year Suites at a cost of nearly $2 million. SVSU has earned the "best dorms" ranking among all public universities in the United States for the past four years from the website Niche. The buildings targeted for renovations are among SVSU's oldest housing units. Tranquil Hall was constructed in 1971 and Pine Grove apartments were built in 1986. Work on both projects is scheduled to begin in May 2023. The Board also approved spending nearly $400,000 to update flooring in the Ryder Center, and it formally approved proceeding with renovations to Brown Hall. The State of Michigan included $21.8 million in state funds for the project in the current state budget; SVSU will match with roughly $7 million in university funds. Preliminary work on renovating Brown Hall has begun and construction work will begin in May 2024. More than 500 SVSU students are completing degrees this December, and the board approved granting graduate and undergraduate degrees. In other business, the Board: Granted sabbaticals to 7 faculty members: Byungil Ahn, history; Julie Commerford, geography; Daniel Cook, English; Julies Gehrke, history; Yu Liu, management; Steven Sepanski; mathematics; and Scott Youngstedt, sociology. Granted emeritus status to Cliff Dorne, who retired from SVSU after 24 years of service. Granted emeritus status to Eric Devos, who retired from SVSU after 29 years of service. Reappointed Andrew Hoopers Pavlik to provide audit services for the 2022-23 fiscal year. __________________________ The board approved spending up to $4.6 million to renovate Living Center South and a portion of Pine Grove Apartments next summer, in advance of the 2020-21 academic year. Living Center South is a resident hall and offers housing for all students. Some of the work planned there includes all-new carpeting; new vinyl flooring in all bathrooms; painting; adding new toilets; replacing about half the bathroom cabinets; replacing all lighting fixtures with new LED fixtures; removing all bathroom closet doors; replacing all shower doors and adding some new furniture. Pine Grove Apartments, located at the north end of campus, offers townhome-style housing for upperclassmen. The renovations of the apartments will be similar and work includes painting the interior and exterior; replacing wood rails and decking with composite material; adding new stove hoods; adding new bathroom faucets; adding a new vinyl stone siding accent wall on the exterior; adding new gutters and downspouts and replacing some damaged exterior wood.
