Description | The project sites include Chatham County, Georgia and Jasper County, South Carolina. Ditching is required within the dredged material containment areas adjacent to Savannah Harbor, Georgia. The containment areas vary from several hundred to over a thousand acres with interiors of dredged sediments consisting of highly saturated soft silty soils interbedded with sand lenses overlying marsh deposits. The containment areas are kept water filled but drained for exterior dike raisings. Ditching begins as soon as possible in the drying areas. Ditching will be completed to expedite drying for surrounding dike raisings as required in the individual containment areas to protect against the breeding of mosquitoes and other pests. Historically, it is approximately 150,000 LF of ditching, 8ft wide by 6ft deep. Work will be intermittent due to the saturated condition of the containment areas. Transport of the excavator between containment areas includes using the Savannah River which is a tidal river with several knot currents. Therefore, a flotation equipped long reach excavator is required both to conduct the ditching and for transportation between containment areas. |
