Hollywood East is an existing sprinkler-protected 15-story high-rise residential building constructed in 1970. An automatic fire alarm system provides protection throughout the building, including photoelectric smoke detectors in individual dwelling units alongside hardwired (120 VAC) smoke alarms. The system smoke detectors in the dwelling units generate a fire evacuation alarm and summon the fire department through a remote station monitoring connection. The hardwired smoke alarms in each unit sound only within the unit. The activation of system smoke detectors inside the dwelling units due to small fires quickly controlled by occupants as well as non-fire events has become a nuisance to the fire service and building occupants.
