Description | The project subject to this report is the construction of a new Orange Beach Wilderness Center building located along the west side of William Silvers Parkway in Orange Beach, Alabama. During our initial April 2020 field exploration, the original proposed building pad area had been rough graded with several feet of sandy fill soils. Based on weak subsurface soils encountered during the initial testing, we provided a preliminary recommendation to undercut the building pad and install two (2) sperate layers of geogrid. Two (2) additional trips were made to perform supplemental soil test soundings in different areas of the site to explore the soil conditions at alternate building locations. A rough sketch indicating three (3) separate building locations was provided. Based on the nine (9) total soil test soundings located in the potential building areas, options “1” and “2”, consist of subgrade soils that are suitable to support the planned building without the need for undercutting or the placement of geogrid. Placing the building in option “3” or in the original location, would require undercutting and the placement of geogrid. We understand that either building location option “1” or “2” will be chosen; therefore, this report is based on these two (2) building locations. If the final layout of the building differs from location “1” or “2”, GeoCon should be contacted for alternative recommendations. The provided information indicated that the new building will be a single-story metal frame structure with a concrete slab-on-grade floor and be supported on shallow foundations. Structural loading information was not available; however, we anticipate maximum wall loads of less than 2 kips per linear foot. We understand that the finished floor elevation (FFE) of the building will be within 24 inches of the existing ground surface. |
