Description

This project consists of dredging the forebay to the Schuylkill Canal just north of Lock 60 in Upper Providence Township, as well as stabilizing the banks of the tributary to the Canal. The purpose of the Lock 60 Project is to remove the accumulated sediment in the area of the forebay, to improve the quality of the recreation area both in water quality and depth. The proposed dredging would occur from Lock 60 to approximately 1,050 feet upstream and would restore the Canal to the original depth of 6.5 feet with a water surface elevation of 82.6 based on previous surveys. The retaining walls located along the canal will also be rehabilitated as part of this project. The dredged material would be tested for potential contaminants, as discussed with the PADEP and the receiving recycling/disposal facility. Additionally, the project proposes to stabilize the banks of a tributary to the Canal which is contributing to the sediment deposition. The tributary banks would be stabilized up to 175 feet upstream of the outlet. Rock protection will be placed at the outlet of the tributary and 10 feet upstream to minimize scour and capture sedimentation.
