Description

The existing autoclave in the Tower Road East Greenhouse (building 1045B) is 60 years old and at the end of life. Parts are no longer available if it were to fail, which would significantly impact teaching and research since sterilization of plant soil is required before disposing, and highly regulated. The existing autoclave is powered by steam. Cornell Campus steam is being phased out and replaced by hot water. The new autoclave will require a stainless steel chamber, about 2400L in size, and powered by electric steam generation. The existing RO system will need to be upgraded to support the new electric steam unit. An alternate location for the new autoclave may need to be considered since the existing space is tight and may not provide enough room for the new autoclave and required utilities.
