Description | Twenty-three people will have to move for the expansion of U.S. 21. According to the N.C. Department of Transportation, the project will add two lanes, two bicycle lanes and a 23-foot raised median from Pump Station Road to north of Fort Dobbs Road, just under a mile. If Statesville shares the cost, sidewalks will also be added. "The proposed project would add capacity to existing U.S. 21, improve pedestrian and bicycle accommodations, and realign intersections where Shumaker Drive and Jane Sowers Road meet U.S. 21," N.C. DOT spokeswoman Jen Thompson said via email. Intersections at Jane Sowers Road and Shumaker Drive will be realigned to correct operational and design deficiencies. Thompson said traffic signals will be installed as well. In December, DOT presented Iredell County Commissioners with two options: expand to the west or to the east. Expanding to the west requires the relocation of 23 residents and three businesses and costs $35,228,000. Expanding to the east requires 12 residents, 14 businesses and one church to move and costs $45,940,000. Commissioners approved expanding U.S. 21 to the west. Right of way acquisition will begin summer 2019. Construction is expected to begin in 2021. As of February 11, 2019, Right of way acquistion is to begin in summer of 2019 and construction is anticipated to begin in 2021. *Project information, including timeline and contacts, has been obtained through public sources.
