Description | Dunham Project Number: 0423187-000-00 The program components that make up the Network Operations and Data Center are predominantly driven by electrical demand, cooling requirements, campus connectivity and systems redundancy. While many buildings on the University campus have heavy demands on power and data, this facility is unique in that the systems are designed to operate without the regular presence of human occupants. Consequently, the spaces required for offices, meetings, etc. are minimal and condensed to a single story volume on the east side of the site. This volume incorporates a raised loading dock, equipment staging area, equipment testing area, and entry vestibule. The new facility is proposed to be located at the North end of the Lot C33 site in order to deter the public from loitering or attempting to access the facility. Through a rigorous process of program and site analysis with University stakeholders, the design team determined that a two story program with the data center "white space" stacked above the mechanical and electrical support spaces is the most appropriate approach to site (allowing to maintain current parking objectives while maintaining a future build site). The resulting two-story volume more appropriately fits the neighboring buildings of the district, while preserving much needed on grade parking. While the primary directive of the pre-design is to provide a facility that consolidates the existing NOC and WBOB Data Centers, the design team and University of Minnesota representatives recognized the potential need for future consolidation of additional existing data center facilities and research computing. This led to opportunity to allow for a more dense use of the same 12,000 sq ft of white space. The denser application of the space requires further consideration of electrical capacity and subsequent mechanical infrastructure. This project objective is to relocate two existing University facilities into one new facility, located near the stadium on the East Bank Campus. The University's MPLS N Campus / Stadium District is the desired location of the new facility in order to maintain current infrastructure requirements, redundant paths of travel and available land to accommodate the new facility. The two facilities to be relocated are the Network Operations Center (NOC) located at 2218 University, and the West Bank Office Building (WBOB) Data Center located at 1300 2nd Street South. |
