Description | Scope: The USDA- Agricultural Research Service Subtropical Horticulture Research Station in Miami Florida is tasked with maintaining subtropical and tropical germplasm accessions and research material for evaluation, breeding, molecular research, and distribution. On the 220 acre site a labyrinth of walls was constructed using quarried native limestone encompassing about 8 acres. The walls are approximately 12 feet high and enclose about 20 individual rooms, ranging from 36’ x 18’ to 20’ x 40’ (Appendix 1). The rooms were designed to act as windbreaks and insulate the plants from extreme cold weather. The rooms house cold sensitive germplasm collections such as cacao, carambola, cycads, palms, and ornamentals. Over time invasive trees have become established both inside and directly outside the walls (Appendix 2). Some invasive trees are now at least thirty feet tall and have the potential to damage the wall structure as well as important collection material (Appendix 3 and 4). Some damage to the walls has occurred when larger trees have fallen due to extreme wind. Specifications: The contractor will be required to cut down the marked trees and remove all debris to pit area on station, leaving the stump four foot high or lower. Some remaining larger trees will need to have the canopy cleared of inner branches. Pothos vines growing on walls, trees, and ground will be removed and debris brought to pit area. Smaller Ficus trees on walls that are defoliated will not require to be cut or removed. Contractor will not damage walls or accessioned germplasm while working. The contractor will supply all equipment needed to complete the scope of work. SHRS staff would be on hand to answer any specific questions concerning details once operations have begun. |
