Description | Historic Name: McLaughlin Lodge Subdistrict: Log Cabin This property originally operated as a tourist camp and was developed over a number of years with log cabins used for lodging. The historic buildings date from the 1920s to the 1950s. After the tourist operation ceased, the property was purchased by Cheyenne Village, an organization that assists persons with developmental disabilities. The site was used as housing for Cheyenne Village clients. Cheyenne Village owned the property from approximately the 1970s until it was sold to the current owners in 2020. The current owners would like to develop approximately ½ of the property on the east side of Sutherland Creek, which runs through the site. They have requested the area of the property on which there are no historic buildings be removed from the local historic district. b. 10 Old Man’s Trail – Historic Name: Hiawatha Gardens Dance Pavilion Potential Subdistrict: Lower Washington or Commercial Core The property was included in the Historic District boundaries when originally formed, and in 1997 when the City went through a process to reduce the boundaries of the district to exclude areas that were vacant or non-historic, this property was taken out of the District. In 2016, the City of Manitou Springs purchased the property to operate the large parking area around the building for public parking. The future use of the building was uncertain. In 2017, the City received a nomination for inclusion of Hiawatha Gardens in the Historic District. That proposal went through the process, but when it was considered by City Council, it was tabled indefinitely and pending the City determining what to do with the building. In 2021, the City removed non-historic additions to the building, and the 1921 reconstruction of the gentlemen’s club area following a fire. The remaining dance pavilion has again been nominated to be re-included in the Location Historic District. |
