Description | Plans call to construct a tunnel under Highway 17 in Santa Cruz County to make the busy route safer for both wildlife and pedestrians. The Caltrans solution, estimated to cost $12 million, has morphed in five years from a tunnel to “the most optimal design,” a 60-foot roadway bridge with an undercrossing to give large animals safe passage It’s the first stand-alone wildlife crossing planned in Caltrans District 5, which encompasses Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, San Benito and Santa Barbara counties. $2 million in funding has been secured for this project. Per the owner, as of February 10, 2022, construction is scheduled to begin on February 23, 2022. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- $5.4 million to build a Wildlife Undercrossing near Scotts Valley on Highway 17 at the Laurel Curve from .6 miles south of Laurel Road to .2 miles north of Laurel Road in Santa Cruz County. |
