Description | Cool Spring Elementary is a three-story, 139,211 sq. ft. facility located on a 21.7 acre site, in Adelphi MD. Originally built in 1955 as a girl's private high school with a dormitory, it has an addition in 1959 of 1,620 sqft., an addition in 1964 of 29,068 sqft. and an addition of 5,888 sqft included in the total gross sqft. The main school building has a State Rated Capacity of 535 students with a current enrollment of 856 PK-6 grades including temporary relocatables. This facility includes a three-story approx 58,000 sqft Annex (former dormitory), which is currently used to provide special services to the community including the Judy Hoyer Center. This school is located in the northern area of the county that is severely over crowded at all grade levels. To maximize our current facilities and existing properties we are proposing to demolish approx 58,000 sqft of the Annex building and add a 74,035 sqft addition to the main school building for use as an intermediate elementary school from grades 3 - 5 at a design capacity of 560 and for up to 20,000 sqft of cooperative use space including the Judy Hoyer Center, Family Learning Center and Mary Center. The remaining approx 81,211 SF occupied school will be renovated for primary elementary school students and remain at the same SRC of 535. The remaining facility will need a piping replacement, ceiling replacement and additional individual bathrooms in approximately seven (7) classrooms to serve PK-2nd grade students. We will also consider other renovations to the remaining facility to make sure it provides sufficient space for the program delivery for PK-2nd grade students. The entire facility will be designed with new state-of-the-art "GREEN" school features meeting Prince George's County Public School's prototypical educational specification with a shared gymnasium and a media center between the main building and the new addition. The FY22 CIP request for Local Planning (LP) was not approved by the State, but the County approved funding for design in the amount of $3,020,000. The request for State and County construction funding will start in FY24. The construction funding requests will occur in FY25, FY26 This project is included in the county's FY 2023-2028 Capital Improvement Program. As of April 6, 2023, further details regarding design and construction timelines have not been identified. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available. |
