Description

Removal of loose, damaged or otherwise unsound CMU pilaster column enclosures and replacement with new, matching CMU enclosures and proper masonry ties that were missing and/or undersized in the original construction. The work involves thirty (30) locations in the large gymnasium at the southeasterly section of the building, ranging in height from approximately (35) to (50) 8” high CMU courses, which require removal and replacement. Products and procedures shall be as follows: 1. Protect gymnasium floor and all adjacent existing construction with tarps, plywood with taped joints and any other protective material required to prevent damage. 2. Remove loose, damaged or otherwise unsound CMU pilaster column enclosures full height, including but not limited to debris left in cavity, temporary timber supports and existing undersized masonry anchors, at thirty (30) locations. Grind and prepare remaining areas to smooth condition as required to receive new CMU enclosures. 3. Clean, wire brush and confirm presence of welded masonry ties full height at each of thirty (30) columns. Install new weld-on ties to existing columns if missing in any locations. 4. Rebuild pilasters to match existing enclosure sizes (approximately 4” x 16”) full height. Install new 3/16” diameter hot dip galvanized masonry ties spaced 16” on center vertically and 8” maximum from top and bottom of column enclosure (Hohmann & Barnard VBTVee Byna-Tie or equal). All ties shall extend to within 3/4” of outside face of new CMU column enclosure. All new CMU shall be nominal 3” thick minimum, bullnose, conforming to ASTM C 90 and Type S mortar shall be used. 5. Paint all new CMU with epoxy paint to provide a uniform color and texture matching existing adjacent construction. 6. Remove all debris off site and dispose of properly.
